Overview

What Is a Packaged Sewage Treatment Plant?

A Packaged Sewage Treatment Plant, or packaged STP, is a compact pre-engineered sewage treatment system supplied as tank-based, skid-mounted or modular package units. It treats domestic sewage from toilets, bathrooms, kitchens and washing areas using screening, equalization, biological treatment, aeration, clarification or membrane separation, filtration and disinfection. Terraquaer packages are configured for 1 KLD to 200 KLD applications where a full civil STP may be too slow, too large or too complex for the site.

Why It Is Required

A packaged STP is required when sewage must be treated close to the source for statutory compliance, odour control, hygiene, water reuse or site independence. Untreated sewage can pollute drains, groundwater and surrounding areas. A properly selected packaged STP reduces BOD, COD, TSS, odour and pathogen risk, while producing treated water that can be reused for flushing, gardening, landscaping, washing or other approved non-potable uses depending on final quality and local norms.

When It Is Selected

  • When the required capacity is typically from 1 KLD to 200 KLD and a modular package is faster than civil construction.
  • When available space is limited in apartments, commercial buildings, institutions, hotels or compact industrial sites.
  • When quick commissioning, predictable equipment scope and easier operation are required.
  • When temporary, remote or decentralized sewage treatment is needed for construction sites, site offices, camps or remote facilities.
  • When treated water reuse is planned and the owner needs a compact treatment train with filtration and disinfection.

Where It Is Used

Packaged STPs are used in apartments, villas, housing societies, commercial buildings, malls, schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, hotels, resorts, restaurants, small industries, warehouses, labour colonies, construction sites, infrastructure projects, remote facilities and decentralized sewage treatment locations. They are suitable for both new projects and retrofit sites where sewage treatment is required but civil tank construction is difficult.

How It Works

  • Collection and screening remove floating matter and coarse solids before the process units.
  • Equalization balances hourly flow variation and protects downstream biological treatment from sudden shock load.
  • Aeration supplies oxygen through blowers and diffusers so microorganisms can reduce BOD and COD.
  • Biological treatment is configured using MBBR, MBR or SBR technology based on space, outlet quality, operator skill and lifecycle cost.
  • Clarification, membrane separation or settling separates treated water from biological solids.
  • Filtration through pressure sand filter, activated carbon filter or equivalent polishing removes residual suspended solids, colour and odour where required.
  • Disinfection using chlorination, UV or suitable method reduces microbial risk before reuse or discharge.
  • Excess sludge is collected, recirculated or periodically removed according to the selected process and O&M plan.

Technology Options: MBBR, MBR and SBR

  • MBBR packaged STP: Uses moving biofilm carrier media with aeration. It is robust, easy to operate and suitable for apartments, hotels, commercial buildings and small industries where simple operation is important.
  • MBR packaged STP: Combines biological treatment with membrane separation for high-quality treated water and compact footprint. It is preferred where treated water reuse quality is more demanding and space is limited.
  • SBR packaged STP: Treats sewage in controlled batch cycles for fill, aeration, settling and decant. It is useful where automatic cycle-based operation and flexible load handling are required.

Capacity Range and Package Configuration

Terraquaer can configure packaged STPs from 1 KLD to 200 KLD. Smaller systems from 1 KLD to 10 KLD are suitable for villas, small offices, site offices and remote facilities. Mid-range systems from 10 KLD to 50 KLD suit apartments, institutions, hotels, restaurants and commercial premises. Larger package systems from 50 KLD to 200 KLD can serve housing societies, resorts, hospitals, campuses, small industries, infrastructure sites and decentralized municipal or industrial facilities. Packages may be FRP, MS, MSEP, containerized, skid-mounted or tank-based depending on duty, site condition and project requirement.

Benefits

  • Space-saving layout compared with conventional civil STP construction.
  • Faster installation because major treatment units are pre-engineered and factory-prepared.
  • Plug-and-play installation with predefined equipment, piping, valves, aeration and electrical scope.
  • Easier operation through compact layout, accessible equipment and automation options.
  • Supports treated water reuse for flushing, gardening, landscaping, washing and approved non-potable use.
  • Scalable package philosophy for phased developments or future load expansion where layout permits.

Terraquaer Scope

Terraquaer supports packaged STP projects through capacity selection, sewage load review, process design, MBBR/MBR/SBR technology selection, blower and diffuser selection, filtration and disinfection selection, package or skid supply, installation support, commissioning, operator training and O&M support. The team can also troubleshoot existing packaged STPs facing odour, foaming, poor treated water quality, high sludge carryover, low DO, membrane fouling, media loss, blower issues or inconsistent operation.
